Effi, who was silently sunk in herself, drinking in each word, half avidly, half fearfully, now sat up and looked over to where the moon has risen behind white but rapidly disappearing clouds. The big, copper-red disc stood behind a corpse of alders, casting its light on a broad sheet of water formed here by the Kessine.
